Home Printing vs. Professional Printing: What You Need to Know Before You Print Your Party Décor

So you’ve decided to download a Little Party Pixie printable file — exciting! Before you hit print, there’s one thing that can make the difference between a good result and a truly gorgeous one: the paper (or card!) you print on.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about paper weight, whether your home printer is up to the job, and when it might be worth calling in the professionals.

First Things First: Why Paper Weight Matters

If you’ve ever printed something at home and wondered why it doesn’t quite look like the example in the listing, paper weight is very often the reason.

Paper weight is measured in GSM — grams per square metre. The higher the number, the thicker and more substantial the paper.

Here’s a simple reference guide:

GSM

What It Feels Like

Common Uses

80gsm

Standard copy paper — thin, flimsy

Everyday office printing

120–160gsm

Noticeably thicker, like a quality letterhead

Flyers, programmes

200–250gsm

Firm card, similar to a greetings card

Invitations, table tags, favour tags

300gsm+

Thick, premium card — rigid and luxurious

High-end invitations, signage, menus

Most home printers come loaded with 80gsm paper. For everyday documents, that’s perfectly fine. For party invitations, decorations, table tags, banners, and keepsakes? It can make your beautifully designed product look and feel underwhelming — and that would be a shame.

For the majority of Little Party Pixie products, we recommend printing on 200–300gsm cardstock. This gives your finished pieces that satisfying, premium weight that makes them feel as special as the occasion they’re celebrating.

Quick tip: If you’re unsure what weight to use for a specific product, check the individual product listing — we always include our recommended print specification.

Option 1: Printing at Home

Printing at home is convenient, instant, and gives you full control over the process. But — and this is important — not all home printers can handle cardstock.

The majority of standard home printers are designed for 80–120gsm paper. Feeding thick cardstock through a printer that isn’t built for it can result in paper jams, smudged ink, poor colour quality, or damage to your printer.

Does Your Printer Support Cardstock?

Before you load up your printer with 200gsm card, check whether your model supports it. The easiest way is:

1.    Google Lens search your printer model number (usually found on a sticker on the front or top of the printer)

2.    Search: "[Your printer model] maximum paper weight GSM"

3.    Check the manufacturer’s specification sheet — this will tell you the maximum paper thickness your printer supports

If your printer maxes out at 120gsm or below, thick cardstock isn’t going to work well at home — and that’s completely fine! Skip ahead to the professional printing section below.

Tips for Printing Cardstock at Home

Once you’ve confirmed your printer can handle the job, here’s how to set yourself up for the best possible result:

Use the correct paper tray or feed

Many printers have a straight paper path or rear feed tray specifically designed for thicker media. Using this instead of the standard front cassette reduces the risk of jams and gives a cleaner feed. Check your printer manual for guidance.

Update your print settings

Before printing, go into your print settings and set the media type to Cardstock, Heavy Paper, or Thick Paper (wording varies by brand), set print quality to Best or High, and set scaling to Actual Size — never “fit to page” as this can subtly shrink your design.

Do a test print first

Before printing a full sheet of your party invitations, do a test print on standard paper first to check alignment, sizing, and colours look correct. Card stock is more expensive than regular paper — don’t waste it on a misaligned test!

Allow ink to dry fully

Inkjet printers in particular need a moment for ink to dry on cardstock, which is less absorbent than standard paper. Allow prints to dry flat for a few minutes before stacking or cutting to avoid smudging.

Buy the right cardstock

Look for cardstock labelled as inkjet-compatible or laser-compatible depending on your printer type. A good starting point is 200–250gsm smooth white cardstock, widely available from office supply stores and online retailers. Brands like Neenah, Hammermill, and HP Premium are well regarded.

Check your ink levels

Low ink = poor colour output. Make sure your cartridges are adequately filled before a big print run, especially if you’re printing multiple copies.

Option 2: Professional Printing

If your home printer doesn’t support the cardstock weight you need, or you simply want a truly premium result for an important occasion — professional printing is the answer, and it’s more accessible and affordable than many people expect.

Professional printers use commercial-grade equipment that handles thick cardstock with ease, produces vibrant and accurate colours, and offers finishing options like matte or gloss lamination, rounded corners, and foil effects that simply aren’t possible at home.

An Important Reminder About Digital Downloads

When you purchase a digital download from Little Party Pixie, you are purchasing the digital design file only — beautifully designed and ready to print, but not the physical printed product itself.

This means that printing costs are separate and will depend on whether you print at home or use a professional service.

Before your party, we recommend factoring in:

The cost of cardstock or printing (whether at home or professional)

Turnaround time if using a print shop — especially for same-day or next-day services, as these may carry a premium

Time to cut and assemble any items that require it

Our advice: Don’t leave printing to the last minute! For important pieces like invitations, we suggest allowing at least 3–5 days before you need them in hand — more if you’re posting them out to guests.

Shipping From Australia, New Zealand, Canada, or the US?

All Little Party Pixie digital downloads are delivered instantly by email regardless of where you are in the world — no international shipping, no waiting, no customs delays.
